Learn how to choose and install an action camera mount on your motorcycle or helmet. We cover handlebar, reservoir, and suction cup options for secure, shake-free footage.

Quick answer

For motorcycle or helmet use, the best action camera mount balances vibration resistance, secure attachment, and camera positioning. We'll walk you through choosing a mount type and installing it correctly.

Handlebar vs. Helmet: Where to Mount Your Action Camera

Mounting on the handlebars gives you a stable, forward-facing view of the road but picks up engine and road vibration. Helmet mounting captures head movement and a more immersive POV but adds weight and can affect helmet balance.

For handlebars, a mount with a double ball-and-socket design (like the RAM Tough-Pole) absorbs more vibration than a rigid arm. For helmets, a low-profile suction cup or a dedicated adhesive base is lighter and less intrusive.

Vibration: The Hidden Enemy of Action Camera Footage

Motorcycle handlebars transmit high-frequency vibration that ruins video quality. A mount with a rubber ball-and-socket joint (like RAM's patented system) dampens vibration better than metal-on-metal connections.

If you mount on a helmet, vibration is less of an issue, but wind noise and buffeting become problems. A low-profile mount reduces wind drag and keeps the camera stable at highway speeds.

How to Install Your Action Camera Mount on a Motorcycle or Helmet

  1. 1. Choose your mounting location: Decide between handlebars, brake/clutch reservoir, or helmet. Handlebars offer stability; the reservoir base frees up bar space; the helmet gives an immersive POV but adds weight. For handlebars, measure the diameter of the bar or rail (0.5 to 1.25 inches works with the reservoir base). For helmets, ensure the surface is clean, dry, and non-textured for suction cup adhesion. Check that your chosen mount's clamp or base fits your bike's specific bar diameter or helmet shape before buying.
  2. 2. Attach the mount base securely: For the RAM Tough-Pole, clamp the Tough-Claw around the rail and tighten the knob until it's snug but not overtightened. For the reservoir base, bolt it to the brake/clutch reservoir cap using the supplied standard or metric hardware. For the suction cup, press it onto a clean, smooth surface and twist the Twist-Lock lever to create a vacuum seal. Overtightening metal clamps can crack plastic reservoirs; hand-tighten only. For suction cups, a single speck of dirt breaks the seal.
  3. 3. Position the camera arm and tighten ball joints: Adjust the double ball-and-socket arm (if using the Tough-Pole or reservoir base) to your desired angle. Tighten the plastic knobs on each ball joint just enough to hold the camera steady without slipping. For the suction cup, the 1-inch ball is already attached; just snap on the camera adapter and lock it with the knob. If the arm slips during a ride, you've left the knobs too loose. If you can't move the arm by hand, you've overtightened and risk cracking the plastic ball.
  4. 4. Attach your action camera and test the view: Snap your action camera onto the universal adapter or screw it onto the 1/4-inch stud. Power on the camera and check the field of view from your riding position. Adjust the arm as needed. Do a short test ride at low speed to check for vibration or movement. Record a 30-second test clip and review it for shakiness. If the image is blurry, tighten the ball joints or switch to a shorter arm.
  5. 5. Secure all cables and check before each ride: Route any charging or data cables away from moving parts (brake lever, clutch, throttle). Use zip ties to secure loose cables to the mount arm or handlebar. Before every ride, give the mount a firm tug to confirm it hasn't loosened. A loose cable can snag on the brake lever or get caught in the spokes. Always do a pre-ride check.
