Step-by-step guide to installing the RAM Glare Shield Clamp Mount for Garmin GPSMAP 695 and 696 in an aircraft cockpit.

Quick answer

Install the RAM Glare Shield Clamp Mount by clamping the base to a glare shield up to 5/8" thick, attaching the double socket arm, and securing your Garmin 695 or 696 in the included cradle.

What makes this mount different from a suction cup or yoke mount

Unlike suction cup mounts that can lose grip on textured cockpit surfaces, the RAM glare shield clamp uses two nylon thumb screws to grip the edge of the glare shield. This design avoids blocking the windshield and keeps the GPS in your natural line of sight without adhesive or vacuum seals.

The double ball and socket arm lets you tilt and rotate the cradle freely, so you can position the Garmin 695 or 696 to reduce glare and keep the screen readable even in direct sunlight.

Installation steps

  1. Position the clamp on the glare shield: Slide the clamp base onto the edge of the glare shield. Make sure the rubber pads contact the top and bottom surfaces evenly. Tighten the two nylon thumb screws by hand until the clamp feels snug. Do not overtighten the thumb screws—finger-tight is enough to avoid cracking the glare shield.
  2. Attach the double socket arm: Press one ball end of the double socket arm into the socket on the clamp base. Rotate the locking knob clockwise to secure it. Leave the knob slightly loose so you can adjust the angle later. If the arm feels loose after tightening, check that the ball is fully seated in the socket before turning the knob.
  3. Mount the GPS cradle: Insert the second ball end into the socket on the back of the cradle. Tighten the locking knob. Slide your Garmin 695 or 696 into the cradle until it clicks into place. The cradle has a release tab on top—press it to remove the GPS. Do not force the device out by prying.
  4. Adjust the viewing angle: Loosen both locking knobs slightly, tilt the GPS to your preferred angle, then retighten both knobs. The double ball system holds position even in turbulence. Test the angle while seated in your normal flying position. A small adjustment now prevents glare and neck strain later.
